An inter-university team from Ukraine won 1st place in the Black Sea Science International Student Research Competition with work carried out within the SWIFTT project.

The winning team from the applied mathematics club working at the Department of Mathematical Modeling and Data Analysis (MMDA), from the National Technical University of Ukraine 'Kyiv Polytechnic Institute'​, is composed of Yevhenii Salii, Volodymyr Kuzin (from MMDA) and Anton Hohol (from the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy) under the leadership of Nataliia Kussul and Hanna Yailymova.

In their work “Machine learning models and technology for classification of forest on satellite data” the team developed a deep learning algorithm for forest classification map creation based on satellite data using existing historical datasets as training data.
